Accused!

Well, here I sit in front of my screen accused of misleading all you good people. Naturally, all my family and friends have been reading these pieces and they all give me feedback. They’re all supposed to say encouraging things, but one friend-of-a-friend (someone I barely know) has asked a pointed question or two.

Back in the Stone Age when times were good

So there we are, huddling round the dining table with our portions looking larger because they’re on small plates. We’ve also started to look out for sugar in our diet. And our will is strengthening because, so far, we haven’t really challenged ourselves.

We’ve started to take our phentermine, Acomplia or Meridia. We’re slowly reducing our sugar intake. It’s the first plateau.

Plateau? I hear you mutter.

As you climb a hill, there’s steady effort to move your weight up the incline. But, once the routine is established, you fall into the rhythm and it grows easier. Well, it actually becomes so easy after a while that it’s like you’re walking on the flat again. And your body goes into a steady state, neither gaining nor losing weight. There was that initial slight loss when you started, but then your weight stabilized at the slightly lower level.

The “Cut down on sugar” Rule

So picture the scene if you can. We’re now all sitting round the dining table — we’re old-fashioned and prefer to sit down at a table and talk to each other while we’re eating. None of these TV dinners where you balance a tray on your knees and chase peas round the plate with a fork. We’ve all got our smaller plates so we can keep a better informed eye on how much we’re eating and wondering what to do next. So, I’m holding forth, telling you what to do.

Switch to smaller plates

Well, hi there, gang! I hope you’re all eating less and shedding those pounds — if you’re like me and combining Phentermine, Acomplia or Meridia with healthy diets and exercise, it should all be working out nicely.

Your eyes are as big as your stomach

We should be celebrating. We’ve got the first two rules of weight loss under our belt instead of extra food. Those simple rules as you’ll remember are eating smaller portions and cutting down on sugar.

That first step

I’m just going to catch up with the story in my head before I go on with the new. I’ve had my road to Damascus moment, talked it through with my doctor and, now with the help of my family friends, I’ve made the start on losing those pounds.

The bubble

It’s funny how writing these pieces makes you look back. The more I think about it, the more I was a bit like President Bush. You read all these stories about how he surrounds himself with people who only tell him what he wants to hear. The newspapers call it the Bush “bubble”. Apparently, when he goes out to meet the people, he only meets the handpicked ones that agree with him, and so on. Well, I was just the same.

So how did I start?

Well, after I talked things through with my doctor, I tossed a coin. Was it to be phentermine or Acomplia? I had no problem with phentermine being an amphetamine. I think I might have taken one or two of those when I was younger. Can’t think what was wrong with me but I seem to remember feeling better. Anyway, Acomplia had just come on the market so not much was known about it. I had temporarily put Meridia to one side. Even though the FDA had continued approval in 2005, I thought I would wait and see how the story played out before trying it — as it happens, there’ve been no more problems reported and the most recent study has confirmed its effectiveness

My motivation to tackle the weight problem

So there I was in the supermarket. I’m getting on a bit in years so it’s become a bit of a struggle to bend those knees to get down to the bottom shelves. Do you remember how it used to be? Just one dip of the knees, flexible waist, an arm that always seemed long enough to reach to the back of the shelf. I never used to think about it. See it. Want it. Pick it up. That was me.

Those lawmakers have a case to answer

I’m going to repeat my admission — sounds a bit like standing up at a Weight Watchers’ meeting to testify — I’ve been putting on weight over the last year. Since my supermarket moment, I’ve been a bit more sensitive to the problems suffered by many. I get the feeling that society’s decided it’s alright to discriminate against those who are overweight.
